Başkent Electricity Distribution Inc. (Başkent EDAŞ), one of Enerjisa Distribution Companies, participated in the Chemical Energy Storage Project (KEDEP), coordinated by the Electricity Distribution Services Association (ELDER), together with Altınay Electromobility Inc., a company within Altınay Technology Group.

The project aims to establish small-scale “energy islands” through energy storage units in regions where transformer investments are not feasible. Within this scope, the installation of two separate battery systems capable of supplying up to 100 households is scheduled to be completed at the Gazi Technopark microgrid by March.

One of the First and Most Comprehensive Energy Storage Projects in Turkey

Launched in August 2018 under ELDER’s coordination, KEDEP is recognized as the first and most comprehensive energy storage project in Turkey’s electricity distribution sector. Başkent EDAŞ became one of the first electricity distribution companies to take part in the initiative.

Within the framework of the project, Başkent EDAŞ and Altınay Electromobility will jointly install lithium-ion–based energy storage units to test various operational scenarios.

Following the agreement signed last month for the development and production of a scalable energy storage system with Altınay Battery Solutions, Başkent EDAŞ will examine energy storage applications in microgrids through the scalable storage system to be developed under KEDEP.

With a total project budget of approximately TRY 4.3 million, two battery solutions with capacities of 105 kWh and 315 kWh—capable of supplying up to 100 households—will be produced. The microgrid installation at Gazi Technopark is scheduled for completion in March 2021.

“We Deliver Energy Storage Solutions with Domestic Engineering Capabilities”

Commenting on the project, Can Bayar, Co-Founder of Altınay Technology Group, stated:

“As Altınay Electromobility, for more than 10 years we have been offering energy storage solutions based on lithium-ion technology developed entirely through our domestic engineering capabilities to numerous vehicle manufacturers in both local and international markets. We are pleased to collaborate with Enerjisa Başkent EDAŞ on this joint R&D project in energy storage solutions. The primary objective of the project is to deliver energy to regions where transformer investments are not feasible. Additionally, energy pools serving small villages, seasonal agricultural irrigation areas, construction sites, and electric charging stations can be considered key focus areas of the project as short- and medium-term solutions.”
